Judith’s Fields

Re-staking saplingsJudith’s Fields, alongside the river Sprint near Gurnal Bridge, was left by the late Judith Helling to the Stephenson Trust who, after planting a hedge and several trees in the fields invited Skelsmergh and Scalthwaiterigg Parish Council to manage the land. KCV have helped local residents plant an additional 370 trees, (one tree per resident in the Parishes),  and many varieties of wildflowers. Tree guards from the now-established hedge have been reused to protect the tree saplings in the fields. The trees will help to stabilise the river bank after severe storm damage during Storm Desmond, and both trees and wildflowers will enhance a woodland corridor along the river by closing a gap. There remains more work to do, such as repairing the drystone walls and continuing to care for this great nature asset.
