Tree nursery

There has been a tree nursery at Dog Kennel Wood for decades, and when Kendal Conservation Volunteers formed in 2014, we decided to carry on the good work. Our trees have mostly been grown from seed, though recently we have been experimenting with hardwood cuttings as well. All the trees are locally sourced, and provided at cost to suitable local conservation work. We grow oak, beech, yew, holly, hazel, blackthorn, hawthorn, crab apple, wych elm, whitebeam, rowan, spindle, sweet chestnut and guelder rose. The trees are normally moved on once they are 50cm high or larger, bare-rooted in the winter, though we always have a few in pots.
